Jasmeen Kaur lives with her family in a small village in the district of Ludhiana. She likes playing with her friends and learning English in school. She wants to study as much as she can so that one day she can become an army officer and help others. Jasmeen, however, is worried that she will not be able to continue going to school because her family is struggling financially. They live in a house shared by another family, where Jasmeen, her parents, her older sister, and her baby brother all live in 2 small rooms. They also do not have access to safe drinking water or electricity, as her father is often unable to pay the utility bills. Her father drives an auto-rickshaw for a living and earns about 6, 000 rupees each month, which is not enough to support a family of five.
Jasmeen’s parents are afraid they will no longer be able to afford her tuition fees. Often times, when young girls like Jasmeen are pulled out of school from an early age due to financial reasons, they are married off at an early age and become dependent on their husbands for the rest of their lives. Early marriages rob young girls of their potential to contribute to the development of their villages by becoming doctors, teachers, or army officers, which is the key to ending poverty and uplifting poor communities across India. If you sponsor Jasmeen today, you can give her the opportunity to fulfill her dream and change the future of her entire community.
