Gurmehar Singh lives in Mansa, Punjab with his father. His father is Gurmehar’s role model and he wants to grow up to be just like him. Gurmehar, however, also knows how hard his father works and how difficult his life is. He repair bicycles for a living and only makes about 4,000 rupees each month – that’s less than $100 CAD. Gurmehar’s mother (Amarjeet Kaur) passed away in 2016 after suffering from heart problems for the past 9 years. She began her medical treatment in 2007 (at a gov’t hospital in Chandigarh), and despite spending around 1 million rupees in on the treatment, she did not survive.
Gurmehar’s dad wants his son to go to school and get a good education, but he cannot afford to pay his tuition much longer, especially if anyone else in their family falls sick and needs medical treatment. Medical expenses in India are extremely high and capable of devastating families. Medicine is a right, not a privilege. When you sponsor a child through SAF CANADA, along with covering the child’s tuition fees we make sure every member of a child’s immediate family receives the treatment they need up to 10,000 rupees. If you sponsor Gurmehar today, we will be able to make sure that nothing robs this young boy of the opportunity to learn and the chance for his family to live a happy, healthy life.
