Arjan Singh lives in Sangrur with his parents and two siblings. When he grows up, Arjan wants to be a doctor so he works very hard in school. Unfortunately, his father is a labourer and is having a difficult time providing for his family. Labourers often perform back-breaking work for very little wages. Arjan’s father makes about 7,000 rupees each month – that’s only $140 CAD. Arjan’s mother also works in a plastics factory and earns about 3,000 rupees each month. His father was also involved in a violent altercation whilst attempting to help someone who was being attacked by a group of people. He attempted to stop the situation, but the attackers continued to physically assault the individual. During the altercation, Arjan’s father injured one of the attackers and was incarcerated for three and a half months, which further exacerbated his financial difficulties. Arjan’s family owns a 2 room house.
